We headed out to Ocotillo Wells to get Wendy some behind the wheel practice with driving off road. We headed out to Devil’s Slide so wendy could learn how to do high bank turns on sand since we’re heading out to Glamis for Xmas week.

First we watched a couple of buggies doing jumps going up the side of Devil’s Slide. Not super air but still fun to watch. Devil’s Slide doesn’t have the tall lip that it did 15 years ago that would allow you to get some serious air. But beats a day at the office any time :)

We then spent some time with Wendy doing a high bank turn on the face of Devil’s Slide. After some runs at the face getting used to the feeling of driving in sand and being sideways on the face of a sand dune she felt comfortable enough to even do the run by herself. You can watch from the pavement and even ride in the passenger seat but there are many small details to learn when your behind the wheel and offroading.

After playing on Devils Slide we cruised down to Shell Reef. Luckily I found a mud puddle on the way there and accidently splashed through it :)

Overall the first run of the day was just a couple hours to get everyone in the groove of cruising across the desert. We then headed back to camp for a quick bite to eat and some Dr Peppers.

We next headed out to Gas Dome so we could take the above trail over into the badlands. The trail was pretty rough and nothing was really marked out in the badlands. We just wandered around looking for cool hills to climb and sand dunes to try and get stuck in. Also we noticed a fire over near Salton Sea (Niland or Brawley maybe?). You can see how fast the smoke built up as we cruised around. We took a video from the inside of the jeep for the start of the trail just so you can see how rough it was.

This was a hill we found to climb. Going down you can hear me laugh. Behind the little hill there is an S Curve when we come down. I hit that with the back tire and it kicked us sideways. Getting kicked sideways is kind of suprising on flat ground. When your going down hill in a tight area and already off camber with a vehicle that sits a little high center anyhow, it’s veeerrrryyyyy interesting :)

As seen by the condition of the jeep at the end of the day, we had another wonderful day out in the desert!!!  Get out and JEEP!!
