Location: East of Lucerne Valley, southeast of Barstow and north of Yucca Valley.

Difficulty: Extremely difficult. Climbs a steep, narrow, boulder-strewn canyon. Lockers required front and rear. Recommend 35-inch tires or larger. Mechanical and body damage likely. Route-finding is complex and challenging.

Features: Sledgehammer, Jackhammer, Clawhammer, After Shock, Outer Limits and Wrecking Ball make up a cluster of nationally recognized extreme trails called the Hammers. Sledgehammer is described here in detail. The Hammers are located on a treacherous mountain in the southeast corner of Johnson Valley OHV Area. This area extends more than 20 miles west to Camp Rock Road and is open to cross-country travel to all vehicles including green-sticker ATVs and dirt bikes. You are allowed to camp up to 14 days anywhere in the area; just don’t block any roads. Pack out all trash. To learn more about the other trails, contact the Victor Valley Four Wheelers or attend their annual Fun In the Sun Rocktoberfest held in early October.

Location: Between Baker and Shoshone. South of Tecopa Hot Springs.

Difficulty: Easy. Shallow stream crossings, sandy washes and mild rocky canyons. Suitable for high-clearance 4×4 SUVs.

Features:  Enjoy nearby Dumont Dunes, then follow Amargosa River to Sperry Townsite. From there, cross Kingston Range Wilderness through a designated non-wilderness corridor. Pass through an area of large talc mines and conclude with a visit to Tecopa Hot Springs. This small town is known for its hot-spring baths. Most are located in commercial campgrounds, but one is maintained by the county and open to the public at no charge. Green-sticker vehicles are allowed on this route until Western Talc Road. You must stay on the main route at all times.
